Water For People

Welcome to the Virginia AWWA/VWEA Water for People Committee.

We believe everyone should expect to have safe water every day. We want to help them in reaching that goal, for every family, every clinic and every school in the regions and districts where we work.

Water For People helps people in developing countries improve quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities, and hygiene education programs.

There’s a big difference between the celebration for a new pump and for a pump that has lasted 20 years. We want communities to celebrate the latter. That’s why we bring people, communities, organizations, local entrepreneurs, and local government together so that solutions last. Our methods may vary from one place to the next, but in each location water flows, toilets are used, infrastructure is eventually replaced using local resources, and communities no longer need NGOs or charities to raise themselves out of water poverty. So where others may see only the need for clean water and sanitation, we see a need for communities to pay a share of the cost, build motivation to care for their systems themselves and help information flow, so that we (and you) know what’s working and what’s not. Making it last isn’t a slogan but a way of planning, financing, working, building capacity, and monitoring that eliminates dependence on charity.

Our vision is a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation, a world where no one suffers or dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease. That vision is within reach and we hope you’ll join us.

The Water Crisis

Around the world, 884 million people do not have access to safe drinking water and 2.6 billion are without adequate sanitation facilities. Every day, nearly 6,000 people who share our planet die from water-related illnesses, and the vast majority are children.

But the real failures are all the broken pumps, filled latrines, and solutions that aren’t. We want to change all that. The solution? Programs that last and examine entire districts and regions rather than purely households and villages. Create solutions that last, and not only do people benefit for a long period, but organizations don’t have to expend time and energy going back again and again to the same location.

Who are we?

Water For People brings together local entrepreneurs, civil society, governments, and communities to establish creative, collaborative solutions that allow people to build and maintain their own reliable safe water systems. Empowering everyone transforms people’s lives by improving health and economic productivity to end the cycle of poverty.

Virginia AWWA/WEA Water For People Committee

The Committee is the local chapter of Water for People (WFP), which is headquartered in Denver, Colorado. The golf tournament is normally held in the spring at one or more locations in the Commonwealth. Individuals and businesses can participate in the tournament and/or contribute as sponsors in support of WFP activities. For more information on this year’s event please go to the GOLF TOURNAMENT section at the top of this page.

The Committee’s goals include:

Our mission is to assist people in developing countries to improve their quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water sources, sanitation facilities and health and hygiene education programs. For over 22 years, we have raised awareness, promoted workplace giving, and provided technical and financial assistance to communities in need in Central and South America, Africa, and Asia. In his tireless work with Chesterfield County, AWWA, and Water For People, Herb Evans epitomized “giving”, and received the Kenneth Miller Award posthumously in 2001. Your participation in the Golf Classic will further Herb’s favorite cause and help bring water and sanitation to disadvantaged communities worldwide.
